Where the leather establishment roam
Rubber/leather/fetish haunt with a slightly-old-fashioned European-leather-bar feel. Which is not at all a bad thing for some. Possibly on the uncool side for the more hip purveyors of fetish — though the music is now a bit less cheesy that it was — Mutschmann's offers a certain unprecious atmosphere, including a sleazy basement den which provides respite for those recovering from myriad SM activities in the expansive and dark sex space a few steps away. Masochists (and sadists) feel a pang on hearing the distant near-poignant cry of pain as they descend the stairs. The bar operates a more democratic, non-fetish-specific door policy on Wednesdays, and Thursdays belong to the nakeds. The no-smoking policy has been relaxed, though the rather odd human-aquarium-like all-glass room from the smoking-ban era remains. Named after Christian Mutschmann (who died August 2013) but owned by gay entrepeneur Karl-Heinz 'Kalle' Klatt (with Michael Sonntag), whose CV also includes the Connection bar and shop, buzzy watering hole Prinzknecht (all in the Fuggerstraße) and the now-defunct SM hotel the Kinky Tulip. By 2012 Thomas Pfizenmaier's New Action [see entry] had usurped the bar as Berlin's preferred leather outpost, but since 2014 Mutschmann has shown signs of recovery. Gear specialists RubAddiciton [see entry] stage a rubber-only night every second Friday of the month. Sneakers/trainers fetishists have the run of the place every first Friday. Mutschmann's originally opened in 2002 following the demise of Cafe Connection on the same spot.
