Isolde's boozy other half
A definite challenge (or friendly neighbour) to the more established gay brasseries closer to Nollendorfplatz, bar-and-restaurant twinplex Tristan and Isolde opened on the Fuggerstraße in May 2016, replacing the similar-looking Café des Artistes with a gay-owned establishment committed to both up-to-date cocktails and drinkees and an eclectic but not sprawling food menu of international dishes produced, when possible, from regional and seasonal ingredients. Very good and not too pricey breakfasts, soups and sandwiches are served from 10am until 4pm, when adjoining restaurant Isolde opens, increasing the choice of Tristan's menu to include Isolde's 'modern German' specialties, plus pulled steak burger, caesar's salad, falafel, meatballs and more. Tristan and Isolde are co-owned by former teacher Christian and ex-Volkswagen food-orientated employee Spyros. The excellent, gay-central corner spot boasts a generous and cruise-convenient area of outdoor tables. The bar keeps going well beyond restaurant hours, with an open end policy that normally means something like 2am during the week and 3am at weekends. 'Stadtbar' translates as 'city bar'. U-Bahn: Wittenbergplatz.
