A note from the “React or Die///React or You’ll be Killed” Campaign, reaffirming the principles of the 2nd (Inter) National March Against Black Genocide.
“[...] I never was, and I’ll never be one of your kind... You who were born in the ghetto and use black people as guinea pigs [...]” Marcão U Kão - DMN
We’re in the last stages of preparation for the 2nd (Inter) National March Against Black Genocide. We have conducted a large, vigorous and widespread articulation over Brazil, bringing together social movements, collectives, associations and groups under the motto “we’re going to take our voices back”, since we don’t want to submit our historical agenda to governments and political parties. And we’ve been heard by our brothers and sisters who are spread, scattered and disappointed with the conjuncture of silence and omission concerning our bodies that have been executed, locked up and humiliated all over this country with the connivance of governments that have wagered on the heating-up of the violence and repression industry when the cries of Reaja (React) has revealed to the world our greatest national tragedy. Genocide!
Our cry and our street actions have had international repercussion and today we autonomously and independently organize a National March, with committees that are spread over all continents, in more than 20 countries.
Thus, it’s important to say that the Reaja label is not for sale and won’t be bargained in exchange for some shady objective of aimless activists and opportunists with no ideological choices. The people who use the Reaja motto and the Reaja brand know that we have a method, and anything outside this method is not Reaja. We don’t support any initiative from people who are wallowing in government funding, who pose for pictures in fancy restaurants and jump from one to another government agency that does nothing for our fight. We will not to ask governments that promote genocide for their blessing to organize a march against genocide, that’s not our contradiction.
We will defend the principles of the March with full strength and fervor against the flags that are unsuitable to our principles. This is a Black People’s March that accepts support from society as a whole. Those who think this is sectarianism, please stay home on August 22nd or carry on with your lives. Our principles are not open to debate. We haven’t turned to any mayor’s office, state government or agency for help. We work with contributions, donations and solidarity. No one is authorized to carry our project around in a folder and ask for money. No one will do this in our name. We ask you to spread this note and these principles around. We’re prepared to fight repression and the enemies that have infiltrated among us to bring confusion, disorder, divisiveness, personalism and dishonesty. For those who insist in talking about this March while trying to obliterate the Reaja brand, we warn you that our memory is rooted in the struggle, and our struggle is not a short-term one. We don’t forget. Make your flags, organize the March committees, which are legitimate spaces for decision, and we’ll meet on August 22nd, 2014, connected to the whole world against genocide in Brazil.
By the Women who coordinate the React or Die campaign.
Reviewing our principles:
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide has the following motto: The Transnational Struggle Against Racism, the Black Diaspora Against Genocide.
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide acknowledges and respects the historical autonomy of black women who have been reacting and resisting to oppression aimed at our communities and creating powerful institutions of struggle, solidarity and humanity of black people in all continents. Black women are the front line of this National March Against Black Genocide, the coordinators and propellers of our action on the streets of Brazil;
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide is an independent political action that is centered on the struggle against racism and genocide, where black men and women will have a voice to talk about themselves, without mediators or well-meant scholars acting as spokespeople for our fight;
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide must be organized in bases, communities, favelas and prisons, in quilombos and villages, in factories and streets, in centers of candomblé and batuque, xangô and tambor de minas, in squats and ghettos, and these collectives must be the subjects and not an object of study or bargain in political articulation;
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide repudiates the use of our suffering for electoral campaigning purposes, be it by any political party or electoral group, since our demands don’t fit in voting ballots or in projects that are extraneous to the autonomy of black, pan-africanist and favela people;
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide will use the colors of Pan-Africanism and will be internationally concerned with the struggle of black people;
- Any initiative outside these principles cannot be presented as the 2nd National March Against Black Genocide, under penalty of earning our National and International repudiation;
- The 2nd National March Against Black Genocide will not have any bonds with political parties or elections, and those who do so will be doing something else that is not the 2nd National March Against Black Genocide.
