Salon – Queerness as Kindness Category and the (dys)function of empathy Guest: ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS invite you to take part in an exploratory discussion on empathy and queerness, using their stage experiments as a toolbox to explore how to undo concepts of category. We ask the question: can we find collective strategies to look beyond the things that separate us? ONCE WE WERE ISLANDS// is scenographer and performance maker Chris Gylee, and writer and performance maker Aslan Richard. We combine performance, installation, and documentation to make a series of interlocking performative machines and laboratories. These charged spaces assist audiences and participants to step outside the roles society has imposed upon them, allowing surprising thoughts to arise. Our work is an ongoing enquiry into kindness, queerness, and the opposites or war, capitalism, and patriarchy. www.oncewewereislands.com *** Salon is a regular program of Village Berlin animating discussions between experts and community members in a cosy atmosphere of a safe and supportive social space. *** The salon is an invitation to exchange experiences and learn from one another.
