Bikini Berlin

Berlin's top consumer story of 2014 has to be Arne Quínze's reinvention of the so-called Bikini-Haus — a 1957 complex by architects Paul Schwebes (1902–78) and Hans Schoszberger (1907–97) — as the world's first concept mall, featuring boutiques, concept and flagship stores (including pop-up establishments) and food outlets aimed at a "discerning, trend and style-conscious international audience". Surrounded by local landmarks such as the zoo, the Tiergarten, the restored Zoo Palast cinema and the iconic Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church), the mall is a long and sleek low-rise structure linked to two towers, one of which operates as the playful 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin [see entry]. This mall is like no other, including somehow appropriate-feeling big-window views of the zoo's monkeys as you shop. And outdoor terraces allow for food and drink with views of the zoo and the Tiergarten. Opened 2 April 2014. Shops and boxes open Monday to Saturday 10am–8pm, plus occasional Sundays. Check website.
