Potemkin

A popular all-day restaurant opened in 2006 by a Russian who named his venue after the mutiny among ill-fed sailors in 1905 Tsarist Russia, made famous by director Sergei Eisenstein (1898–1948) in his dramatically edited film Battleship Potemkin (1925), a work which featured in critics' and cineastes' all-time Top Ten lists for much of the last century. The food here — dumplings, blinies, stroganoffs, pork medallions etc — is surely an improvement on the rotten meat given to the sailors, and it can be consumed outdoors, with a view of late-19th-century Viktoria-Luise-Platz, marked by a rising central fountain and ruins-like classical colonnades at either end. By contrast, the interior runs havoc with jolting shades of red (à l revolution). Potemkin remains something of a breakfast haven for gay hangovers. Shamefully the restaurant charges for tap water (though this may no longer be??). Located directly next door to German neighbour Montevideo [see entry] – a six-minute walk south of the Fuggerstraße.
